Frank Herbert Books
My personal favorite Dune book is Chapterhouse. It was released shortly after Frank Herbert's wife passed away & not long before Frank Herbert himself moved on. The majority of the book follows a death & dying theme which carries a much more introspective and personal touch due to his personal crisis and impending death.

Brian Herbert & Kevin Anderson Books
I've heard quite a bit of negativity that's been focused on the Brian Herbert books, which I feel is only somewhat deserved. The first two books that he wrote (House Atreides & to a lesser part House Harkonnen) didn't have the right feel for a Dune book, but they definitely hit their stride right after.
You just can't go into a Brian Herbert/Kevin Anderson book expecting Frank Herbert, they're completely different people.
Legends Of Dune
These books give you the backstory pertaining to the popularization of the spice melange & the Butlerian Jihad (which spans all 3 books).

Prelude To Dune
These three books share a storyline in sequential order but told mostly from the point of view of the eponymous house while also showing some views from the other 2 houses.
